Prevalence of Periodontopathogens Using Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction in Adolescents

Abstract
Objectives: The author had conducted this study for the purpose to determine the prevalence of oral microbes known as the cause of periodontopathogens in adolescents in Korea.
Methods: Oral examination was conducted for 146 students. The amount of bacteria associated with periodontal disease such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens from subjects’ oral cavity by real-time polymerase chain reaction was counted, and prevalence of periodontopathogens additionally investigated.
Results: The percentages of specific intra-oral microbes found in the subjects were elementary school student P. gingivalis 5%, T. denticola 7.5%, F. nucleatum 100%, P. intermedia 10%, and P. nigrescens 60%, middle school student P. gingivalis 12.2%, T. denticola 0%, F. nucleatum 100%, P. intermedia 12.2%, and P. nigrescens 69.4%, high school student P. gingivalis 3.5%, T. denticola 0%, F. nucleatum 98.2%, P. intermedia 7%, and P. nigrescens 68.4%.
Conclusions: The microbe detected with the largest amount among the oral microbes tested was F. nucleatum, followed by P. nigrescens in the order, therefore the most effective and safe method of preventing periodontal disease is healthy tooth maintenance, oral hygiene and regular oral examinations.
